World Run Day draws 79 entrants

Sunday’s World Run Day for the United Way drew 79 runners to compete in the half marathon, 10k and 5k events.

The three races began and ended at the Gillett Recreation Center on the BSU campus.

Bemidji’s Ryan Aylesworth led 16 runners in the men’s half marathon, finishing in 1:34.05.

Mike Wheeler was 70 seconds back in second with John Jokela, Ken Grantier and Dennis Bartz rounding out the top five.

Karen Ladig led eight women in the 13 mile events with a 1:37.05 finish, some 11 minutes ahead of runnerup Connie Chaney.

Wanda Wildenberg, Sally Ohman and Mary Clemenson were the next three home.

The small seven-runner men’s 10k was won by Zach Fore in 44:26, nearly 90 seconds better than Dan Bryant. John Littlewolf, Stewart Jorgenson and Brent Lane were 3-4-5.

The women’s 10k went to Julie Ehlers in 47:12. five minutes in front of Carmen Fore. Susan Richards, Sherri Moe and Mary Moody were the next three across the line in an 11 runner field.

In the 5k, Mike Spiry led the men in 21:24, topping John Truedson by 39 seconds. Kyle Batchelder was third trailed by Allan Sushak and Rogen Spiry. Seven other runners trailed.

The women’s 5k drew the largest field, 25.

Elli Johnson won in 20:37 with Park Rapids’ Deb Thompson 45 seconds back.

BHS cross country stars Kelly Bittner and Chelsea Warren were 3-4 with Sarah Witt fifth.

BHS soccer star Megan Wallner and state pole vault champion Andrea Smith tied for sixth.
