How do I register for World Run Day?

We prefer that you register through one of the many group events that are being scheduled for 2003. If one isn't scheduled in your location, please contact your running club, charity, or special event director. Real estate is still available for a World Run Day event in your immediate area! If you are an enthusiastic individual runner, and cannot register at a group location, conveniently register through www.active.com. Search for the running event listed as World Run Day with your city name. If we didn't get to listing it, register for the closest city. Or, treat yourself to an exotic vacation ... travel overseas if no local event is listed!

Once you are registered you will receive the event t-shirt and instructions regarding the posting of results. Event T-shirts will be sent prior to the event. The sooner you order, the sooner you will receive your one-of-a-kind event shirt! If we get a tremendous response you will get your shirt no later than November 30th.

How can I run in two events at once?

World Run Day asks the runner to run any distance. If you run in a marathon race on World Run Day you have chosen to run 26.2 miles as your distance. What charity you donate to and the amount is your own decision. Remember, every little bit to charity counts!

Where can I locate an event?

You can run your favorite training course, on the track, a treadmill or select a running event in many locations around the world. This year, special World Run Day™ events are being scheduled throughout the entire world! Obviously this is a large task, but with your enthusiasm we can make it happen.

You may wish to start your own (formal/informal) event with other runners in your area. If your run is expected to draw approximately 50 people please contact us. We hope that charities can embrace the day by holding running events in different parts of the country, in different parts of the world. If needed, there are great running and race management services that can help. Also, you'd be amazed at how a listing in a local paper or newsletter can bring out people to support charity! CREATE YOUR OWN EVENT WITH 50 or MORE RUNNERS!

When do I receive my event t-shirt?

Due to the volume of orders we will desperately try to have your shirt by event day. In 2003 we will be registering individuals starting in September.

Can I choose not to have an event t-shirt?

Yes. If you would like to run and offer to donate the cost of registration to your favorite charity (your registration/or t-shirt) on this day, you can consider it "donating your shirt to charity".  This is the ultimate in charitable giving for the day! Use our results form to post your results - after we track our registered runners! In a sense, you are what we call in the racing world "a bandit" - a non-registered runner.

Note:
A bandit cannot run in a World Run Day group event, only in the "free-style" individual event. Remember: run and donate!

Why doesn't World Run Day support only one charity?

This is an event for runners and charity. We applaud the work of every charity on the face of the earth! Runners may have special causes - this is the time to show your heart. If you know people that aren't running, ask if they would like to donate to your charity. No pressure, but asking a question can't hurt....any amount, any charity.

Who is World Run Day?

World Run Day is no one person, it is an event that is hosted by event directors, runners, charities, and volunteers worldwide (since 1999) and looking to gain, at minimum, in-kind corporate sponsorship in 2003. World Run Day makes sure that 100% of all donations go to charity. All monies from T-shirt registrations and any sponsorship monies are allocated to promoting the event.

What is the overall purpose of World Run Day?

The best explanation can be given by reading The Event's Intent created in 1999. There is an updated version created each year.

When is World Run Day?

World Run Day occurs on the Sunday closest to November 8th. In 2003 it falls on November 9th.

How can I best understand World Run Day?

World Run Day is patterned after such events as Earth Day and the recent Millennium Celebration that occurred worldwide. The best explanation is provided in a narrative that was prepared for speaking to a running club (Northport Road Running Club in Northport, New York) October of 1999 called The Intent.

Part of the inspiration can be provided in the speech given to the Greater Long Island Running Club (largest on Long Island, NY) in June 2000, and the Bohemia Track Club in October 2000. The Long Beach Road Runners Club in New York was also contacted regarding the event. In 2002 many media reporters contacted us to help explain the event to them.

Why running?

Running is a great activity to maintain your health, keep competitive, and have fun. You meet great people in the process, and get opportunities to help others. Much information has been written on running from both the mind and the body perspectives. We plan to point to that information as the event approaches. Running is the most common form of exercise and is a base for conditioning most every professional athlete.

Why one special day?

It's time we had a day reserved for running, and also charity, on an international basis - that everyone can enjoy. It's the Earth Day equivalent. When a critical mass develops for a great event, such as the millennium celebration, great things can happen. Despite the good physical condition of runners, we're probably not going to hold out for another millennium celebration (Y3K?). We plan to work at  having a great celebration - for a good cause - with ourselves and our friends, now!

Why all charities?

Our rule was to let the runner decide. Let people donate for something that is special to them. Lead another generation into charitable donation by example. Lead another generation into running by creating a great annual event and have fun doing it!

How is it possible?

With low expenses via the internet, volunteers that want to see a dramatic event (and make it appeal to multiple languages), and pursuit of an idealistic concept with others, it can happen. Runners can spread the word with our posters.

What is meant by Pursuit & Perseverance?

Perhaps more than any other phrase in the world, "pursuit and perseverance" has been the driver of many events. This one phrase has come to define the character of this event and those behind it. Inspiration has come from many runners, many magazines, and many musicians. We feel that the artists of the world have already imagined this event. Bill McDermott, our Event Coordinator feels it's the job of the runners around the world to achieve it. Who else can?

How do I post my results?

A form for registrants will be available with the help of our sponsor (Sysoft Inc.) to post your running and charity information on our site starting November 10, 2003. For those entrants unable to post, we recommend that they furnish information to someone with e-mail capability. If all else fails, we will accept results at our World Run Day office and post them - but cannot guarantee this. Our target date is Thanksgiving 2003. Trust us - THEY WILL BE PUT UP!

Can I Be A Bandit?

Hmm... The entire running community discourages bandits (non-registered runners). In the spirit of the day, however, if you must be a bandit (remember to run and donate) we will allow it*. With the events being planned, it may pay to register ahead and drive to the run.

*Note: This does not include World Run Day runners who run within an existing group event. It includes "free-style" individual runners.

We cannot guarantee it yet, but you may (as a bandit) be able to post your results on our website.
