Hi Bill!
I just wanted to take a few minutes and THANK YOU for organizing this race! My son Skyler Snider is 10, and has been running for about 5 years. He started with Fun runs of a mile...and has been running 5k's for the past 3 years. We found information on World Run Day on Active Dot com about 3 weeks prior to the event and he signed up.
Together we researched several charities to raise funds for, and he decided to raise funds for a local children's fund, to benefit 2 children diagnosed in 2005 with Tay-Sach's disease. This is a Fatal genetic disorder for which there is no cure...the average life span is 15 years old. MacKenzie & Spencer Frechette are 14 & 12 at this time. (More about them is available on their site at www.caringbridge.org/visit/mackenzieandspencer )
Skyler ran his World Run Day race (called "SKYLER'S CHALLENGE") on Nov 11th 2007 @11: 11am in Grand Blanc, Mi. He ran alone, with his family cheering him on .
He completed his race in 36min 43sec. His best time this year was 29:43. He hadn't been feeling well 2 days prior, so he was happy with his results. In 3 short weeks he raised $425.00 for the Frechette Children's Fund, and there are still donations coming in. His goal was $500.00.
Next year, his goal is to raise $1000.00 for The Children's Wish Fund at Hurley Medical Center in Flint , MI ...and dedicate it in honor of MacKenzie & Spencer Frechette.
They have been recipients of a wish in the past. This way he can help a lot of children, and still help create an awareness about this rare & fatal disease. Now that we know about World Run Day...he'll have more time to reach his goal.
I wasn't sure how to get on the site to post updates about his race...but I did want to let you know how he did! I also wanted to take the time to thank you for all of your efforts! This is a great project! It was great to see my son, actively involved in helping others, at a young age. Hopefully he is building on a spirit of generosity that will stay with him as he matures. He even did a mini-interview with a Flint Journal Reporter about his efforts, nothing has come of that yet but we're still hopeful! He's hoping to find more ways to get the word out for the 2008 race.
Again, Thank -You & May you be Blessed!
