Syracuse Runners Go the Distance to End Hunger

More than 300 million reasons brought students and community members out for World Run Day: Syracuse. The cold, overcast conditions did not deter a group of 40 runners from their fight against child hunger; they were motivated by the children that suffer and die each day from a preventable and unnecessary affliction.

On Sunday, November 5, 2006, the first annual World Run Day: Syracuse was held at Barry Park. The 5K run kicked off at 10AM and was sponsored by a committee of students of the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. 

Jessica Swan, the event’s organizer, expressed her delight at the events success: “It was so uplifting to know that we were united with individuals across the world to make a difference in the fight against child hunger.”

The event raised $962.85 in cash for the World Food Programme in addition to the donations from online registrations. 

“In just three weeks of planning, it is phenomenal to consider the impact the Syracuse run will make. We have given the gift of food…the gift of life…to 5068 children,” Swan noted.
