PRESS RELEASE  NOV 4, 2020 10:00 EST

Long Beach, NY, Nov 4, 2020 — As Virtual Runs come to an end in 2020, there’s one global run that all charitable runners can join: World Run Day, held this Sunday, November 8th. The 22nd annual event started the virtual run craze in the small city of Long Beach, NY back in 1999. What sets this virtual event apart from others today, is the unique assortment of event shirt designs (230+) representing each country. The first-ever World Run Day Medal is also distributed to every paid registrant ($20 USD) on virtually every continent at www.runday.com.

Since the pandemic, the “virtual-run-event-for-charity” concept has become more mainstream with runners. They celebrate in the spirit of the day, together; but run separately among seven different continents. Initially dubbed “The Global Fitness and Charity Challenge,” World Run Day has maintained its original concept: run to celebrate the sport of running and make a donation to a favorite local charity.

All participants print out a runner bib, run, and can donate to their favorite cause. Afterwards, they can enter distance & time results along with other runners worldwide. The same medal, regardless of each runner’s country of origin; is mailed to paid participants.

A free registration category gets a runner a personalized digital runner bib – at no cost. They also have the opportunity to upload their virtual run results with other runners. Whether in Los Angeles, Barcelona, Sydney, or even The Vatican, all runners can participate.

World Run Day Event Director, Bill McDermott, of Long Beach, NY created the event shirt collection over the summer and designed the medal for distribution to runners after the event. “Many charities are suffering this year, due to the pandemic, and it’s a good reason to run for them”, states McDermott.  “Let the runner decide,” has been the motto of the event since its inception, and it continues today.

With over 10,000 participants over its 22-year history, primarily in the USA, the event still looks for global runners to make it more meaningful. At the moment, some local events in the New York area are cropping up: World Run Day – Long Beach, and World Run Day – Long Island will be offered to help serve multiple charities. Long Islanders will donate to a food program led by The Greater Long Island Running Club, which McDermott is a member of and where he volunteers filming local brewery runs. The Long Beach event, in his hometown, is set up to assist over a dozen charities within the City of Long Beach.

It’s the best of both worlds: “Going out for a healthy run and compassionately donating to a favorite local charity,” states McDermott.

Long Beach, NY   November 1, 2020

World Run Day for Long Beach and Long Island Created

As Virtual Runs are added to the racing calendar, from areas all over the country, two new Long Island-based events have been added. The “virtual run” idea first started in Long Beach, NY back in 1999. Two weeks ago, events were created for runners in the city of Long Beach, and also for the runners on the rest of Long Island. The “virtual run” concept has landed into the vocabulary of most runners and may even be considered “mainstream” by non-runners (as a result of covid 19). Initially dubbed “The Global Fitness and Charity Challenge,” to celebrate the sport of running worldwide, it has many runners making an impact with their favorite local charity. They simply make a donation (as simply as writing a check) to their charity of choice. For their efforts, runners are mailed the same medal, regardless of country origin; but are welcome to purchase a unique event shirt inspired by their country flag. All runners (via paid and free registration categories) are welcome to join and receive a free personalized bib to be part of the celebration at runday.com

Long Islanders will donate to a food program led by The Greater Long Island Running Club, which McDermott is a member of (and volunteers filming local brewery runs) and a video called “100 Benefits of Running” on his YouTube channel. The Long Beach event is set up to assist over a dozen charities in the City of Long Beach.

Paid registration ($20) earns all runners a bib and medal. A free registration category earns them a personalized bib and chance to participate with other runners in town. It’s all  about fitness and charity in the town of Long Beach. Runners are instructed to complete their run before midnight November 8th, the end of World Run Day.

“Running virtually seems to be one of the best fundraising tools on the Island at the moment,” says Bill, a member of both the New York Road Runners and the Greater Long Island Running Club. Some national charities have a huge marketing budget for virtual runs. World Run Day – Long Beach is based on the collective efforts of residents and charities in town. World Run Day – Long Island is promoted on the Greater Long Island Facebook page.

Long Beach Virtual Run to Benefit its Charities

Traditional running events across the Island have gone “virtual,” and typically benefit a charity of two. Long Beach has a virtual run to benefit over a dozen. All are located in The City of Long Beach. The event, named World Run Day – Long Beach offers participant medals, runner bibs, a results board, and the opportunity to aid one of 15 charities in town. Whether running on its iconic boardwalk, a treadmill, or anywhere else in town, runners can celebrate fitness and charitable giving. “Runners register, choose a Long Beach charity, then pick a day to run and then record their time for any distance. They all have the ability to enter their results on-line. All net proceeds are directed to their charity of choice,” states Bill McDermott, a Long Beach runner and event organizer.

Paid registration ($20) earns all runners a bib and medal. A free registration category a earns them a personalized bib and chance to participate with other runners in town. World Run Day 2020: A Global Virtual Run with an Olympic Touch

Worldwide Charity Run offers Free Bibs, Medals, and T-Shirt designs for every country.

Worldwide Charity Run offers Free Bibs, Medals, and T-Shirt designs for every country

PRESS RELEASE  OCT 28, 2020 10:00 EST

NEW YORK, October 28, 2020  –

World Run Day 2020: A Global Virtual Run with an Olympic Touch

Virtual Running exploded in 2020 due to Covid-19. One virtual event, World Run Day, had its beginnings last century (1999) in Long Beach, NY with a single t-shirt design and a 2×3 foot poster pinned to its iconic Boardwalk to record results. Today, it offers a wide assortment of opportunities for runners to share distance and time results, photos, and unique shirt designs with runners in different continents — all while donating to charities on a local level.

Advancements in runner registration platforms, instant runner bibs, digital printing technology for event shirts, website pages providing a “Virtual Expo”and other things pioneered by Event Coordinator Bill McDermott, bring a look and feel like an Olympic Event.

This summer over 200 event t-shirt designs were created using the word RUN as a central design and incorporating each country’s flag in the design. Almost like olympians parading in their uniforms, runners from all corners of the globe can participate – for free!

A free category gets each runner an E-bib (Electronic or Digital Bib they can print out). They also have the capability to load their results on-line. Pictures can be uploaded as well. A “Paid” category does the same, but will also mail an official World Run Day medal to each participant. T-shirts are available separately from the World Run Day SHOP.

Along with fully developing the concept of World Run Day in 1999, McDermott even went the extra distance to trademark the term, create brochures, set up E-BIB’s (electronic bib pdf ), and create other terms beyond the typical nomenclature known to runners back then. The World Run Day Expo consisting of multiple TV-like screens on a web page. Each one streaming separate sponsor advertisements, selling other running events, and educating runners about Long Island’s wildly popular “RUN TO THE BREWERY” events. He also is hosting a special event in the City of Long Beach, NY for runners and charities and lending a hand to the Greater Long Island Running Club. All donations to these local events will go to charities – including profits made from t-shirt and sweatshirt sales.

McDermott is a member of New York’s NYRRC (New York Road Runners Club), Long Island’s GLIRC (Greater Long Island Running Club) and LIRC (Long Island Running Club). He is also a former member of RUSA (Running in The USA). A separate event called World Run Day – Long Island was prepared for the Greater Long Island Running Club, and another event World Run Day – Long Beach is being prepared for the community of Long Beach, NY
