PRESS RELEASE  OCT 29, 2020 10:00 EST

NEW YORK, October 29, 2020  –

Long Island Runners Not “Virtually Upset;” But “Really Upset”

The Long Island Running Community, known for attendance at idyllic venues, innovative run-for-charity events, and vibrant contributions to the health of its members ….is upset. While state regulations allow traditional running events to rebound in neighboring New York City, Long Island running events seem to be “hamstrung” or come to a complete halt. It leaves many “virtual” runners “really” upset.

Although many virtual runs have taken place on Long Island, runners realize it’s just not the same. Whether it’s an upcoming virtual run, such as World Run Day (Long Island and Long Beach), our countless upcoming virtual Turkey Trots, runners are waiting for a little bit of fairness that New York City seems to be enjoying.

Running virtually seems to be the only game on the Island at the moment, says Bill McDermott, a member of both New York Road Runners and Greater Long Island Running Club, who resides in Long Beach, NY. It’s great that New York City is allowed to have large running events; but Long Islanders deserve the same.

It’s a sobering thought to think that Long Island’s wildly popular “RUN TO THE BREWERY” events have pretty much dried up with some limited participation thanks to the virtual run model. “Most runners, I believe, miss the camaraderie. Clubs and running events are the glue that bring runners together,” states McDermott. a lifelong runner.

In the meantime, runners stay with the “virtual model” but anxious to get back to what they all love: running in a real race, “That’s what’s so upsetting”, exclaims McDermott, who is coordinating World Run Day on Long Island and also World Run Day – Long Beach to benefit multiple charities.

World Run Day 2020: A Global Virtual Run with an Olympic Touch

Virtual Running exploded in 2020 due to Covid-19. One virtual event, World Run Day, had its beginnings last century (1999) in Long Beach, NY with a single t-shirt design and a 2×3 foot poster pinned to its iconic Boardwalk to record results. Today, it offers a wide assortment of opportunities for runners to share distance and time results, photos, and unique shirt designs with runners in different continents — all while donating to charities on a local level.

Advancements in runner registration platforms, instant runner bibs, digital printing technology for event shirts, website pages providing a “Virtual Expo”and other things pioneered by Event Coordinator Bill McDermott, bring a look and feel like an Olympic Event.

This summer over 200 event t-shirt designs were created using the word RUN as a central design and incorporating each country’s flag in the design. Almost like olympians parading in their uniforms, runners from all corners of the globe can participate – for free!

A free category gets each runner an E-bib (Electronic or Digital Bib they can print out). They also have the capability to load their results on-line. Pictures can be uploaded as well. A “Paid” category does the same, but will also mail an official World Run Day medal to each participant. T-shirts are available separately from the World Run Day SHOP.

Along with fully developing the concept of World Run Day in 1999, McDermott even went the extra distance to trademark the term, create brochures, set up E-BIB’s (electronic bib pdf ), and create other terms beyond the typical nomenclature known to runners back then. The World Run Day Expo consisting of multiple TV-like screens on a web page. Each one streaming separate sponsor advertisements, selling other running events, and educating runners about Long Island’s wildly popular “RUN TO THE BREWERY” events. He also is hosting a special event in the City of Long Beach, NY for runners and charities and lending a hand to the Greater Long Island Running Club. All donations to these local events will go to charities – including profits made from t-shirt and sweatshirt sales.

McDermott is a member of New York’s NYRRC (New York Road Runners Club), Long Island’s GLIRC (Greater Long Island Running Club) and LIRC (Long Island Running Club). He is also a former member of RUSA (Running in The USA). A separate event called World Run Day – Long Island was prepared for the Greater Long Island Running Club, and another event World Run Day – Long Beach is being prepared for the community of Long Beach, NY
